Library Cards and Borrowing

Card –

Local residents (Addison, Ferrisburgh, Panton, Vergennes, Waltham) may obtain a library card without charge. Children at the age of 8 can get their own library card with parent’s or guardian’s permission and signature. Teens who are 16 years of age can apply for their own library card.  We do not have family cards. We encourage individual cards to protect the confidentiality of our patrons. To receive a card please ask at the Circulation desk, present an ID or current piece of mail with your address, and you will be given a card application form and a new card that will work that day!

Out of Town Residents may obtain a Bixby library card for the annual fee of $30.00 (payable via cash/check).   Fee may be subject to change. If you are a Vermont resident with a card at another library, you may be eligible for the Home Card program. This let’s you use your local library card to check out items at Bixby. Check the list of Homecard library participants here. You must have your physical library card from your home library to set up a Homecard account at the Bixby.

Materials are borrowed for two weeks and can be renewed twice. No overdue fines are charged, but contributions to the conscience box are always welcome. If an item is lost or damaged, we ask that patrons pay the cost of the item so the library can replace it. Educators within the five towns may borrow materials for classroom use for longer time periods, please let the staff know if you require a teachers account.

Your library account will have an expiration date. You will receive a 30 day warning via email, before your account expires. You must come into the library and confirm your account details with us to receive an account renewal. Your account will be locked until you renew.

Account –

After you receive a library card, patrons have access to their account online. Go to the our catalog from the Bixby home page, and click Login in the upper right. Your user name is the bar code on your library card, and the last 4 digits on the card are your initial password. You can change the password. If you forget your password click “Forgot Password” in the login screen, enter your user name,  and your password will be emailed to you. If this does not work, please call the library (802-877-2211) and we can reset your information.

Patrons may place a reserve on items. Login to our catalog, then search to see if the Bixby has a copy of the item you want, if you find it you should see a “Place a Hold” option that you can click. A reserve for an item available on the shelf will send the library an alert, once the staff have pulled the item off the shelf you will be called or emailed to inform you the item is waiting for you on our hold shelf.  A reserve for an item that is currently checked out will sit until the item is returned and if you are the next patron on the list for the item, you will be called or emailed to inform you the item is waiting for you on our hold shelf. If you do not want to place a hold on an item yourself, you are welcome to call us (802-877-2211) and our staff will place the hold for you.

Patrons may renew items they currently have checked out. Login to our catalog, click you name in the upper right, and under “Your Transactions” click “Items Out”. You can view the items you have checked out and choose which ones you would like to renew.  You only have two renewals before an item must be returned. If there is a hold on the item, you will not be allowed to renew it. If the item is an Inter-library Loan, you will not be allowed to self renew it, please call  (802-877-2211) to request to see if a renewal is possible. If you do not want to renew an item yourself, you are welcome to call us and our staff will renew it for you.

Inter-Library Loan –

If the Bixby does not own a copy of the material you want, you can request an Inter-Library Loan. This is a free service! Our staff will go out and search the wider Vermont area for your request, and if found the item will be shipped to us for you to borrow! These items can take some time to arrive, and some items we may be unable to find. If you would like to place a request, please ask at the Circulation desk and you will be given a request slip to fill out. Once the item arrives you will be called or emailed to inform you the item is waiting for you on our hold shelf, if we cannot find the item we will also notify you. If the item is an Inter-library Loan, you will not be allowed to self renew it, please call request to see if a renewal is possible.
